Ethical Consideration in Enterprise Decision Making

Professor Ali E. Abbas is Director of the Center for Interdisciplinary Decisions & Ethics (DECIDE). He is also Professor of Industrial and Systems Engineering and Public Policy at the University of Southern California. Dr. Abbas earned his Ph.D. in Management Science and Engineering from Stanford University with a minor in Electrical Engineering. The recipient of multiple awards from the National Science Foundation for his work, Dr. Abbas’ research focuses on decision analysis, risk analysis, multi-attribute utility theory, and data-based decision making. He is widely published in books, journals, and conference publications, and has shared his expertise through television appearances, TEDx and other invited talks.

Marsha E. Hames is a Managing Director of Strategy and Development for a Leading Global Compliance & Ethics Consulting firm.  Specializing in Education & Engagement in Governance, Culture and Risk management, she advises multinational organizations and their executive stakeholders around driving business value and risk mitigation through strategic, values-based education and engagement approaches to ethics, compliance and organizational culture. Her expertise is in shaping the governance, culture, and leadership systems that catalyze ethical behavior within organizations. Her wealth of experience includes advising dozens of transformational projects for organizations across a spectrum of industries both in the private, commercial and non-profit sectors. Dr. Ershaghi Hames holds a Doctorate in Educational Technology & Leadership from Pepperdine University.  Her dissertation was on the role of Ethical Leadership as an Enabler of Organizational Culture Change. She holds an M.A. in Educational Technology from Pepperdine University, and a B.A. from the University of Southern California.  She is a Certified Compliance and Ethics Professional. 

Dr. Josh Hyatt, Executive Director, Integrated Risk Management, Keck Medicine of USC is a healthcare risk manager, bioethicist, lecturer, and professor. He has been in healthcare and risk management for more than 25 years and has achieved the designation of certified professional in health care risk management (CPHRM). His academic interests include the relationships between health law and bioethics, risk management, and ethical and legal considerations in LGBT healthcare. Dr. Hyatt works as an adjunct and visiting professor with several universities, teaching on topics such as health law, bioethics, health leadership, health policy and analysis, health informatics, and strategic management.

Course Description:

This two and a half-day course will provide an overview of the critical role ethical decision making plays in a globally integrated environment. Against the backdrop of today’s fast-paced, competitive global economy, certain business practices in one geographical region may be considered unethical or may violate legal business standards in the organization’s Code of Conduct, yet be locally acceptable.

This course will start with basic ethical distinctions on an individual level such as  ethical-legal-prudential distinctions; positive vs. negative injunctions, and consequence-based vs. action-based dilemmas. Next, the course will delve into how global organizations can proactively focus on fostering open reporting cultures, and ‘walk the talk’, modeling the ethical Code.  Topical exercises include strategies to build greater organizational transparency, speaking out, and how to develop a stronger and more visible tone in the middle on a global scale.   Topics will also include biomedical ethics principles, with emphasis on healthcare based ethical systems and decision-making processes. Participants will evaluate and problem solve simulation scenarios around ethical issues involving complex decisions on topics such as corruption and bribery, labor and human rights, environmental regulations, and more. Real world examples and complex social/topical issues will be discussed and feedback from participants solicited.
